Evapotranspiration is the part of the water cycle that combines evaporation and transpiration. As the sun heats the Earth, water evaporates from sources like soil and water bodies and transpires when plants take water from the soil and release it as vapor. Because it represents “consumed” water, knowing evapotranspiration rates is key to planning watering schedules.
