Water Hammer

Water hammer, a.k.a. hydraulic shock, happens within pipes when water flow suddenly changes or stops and causes excess pressure, e.g. when a valve is suddenly turned off. A sign of water hammer is a knocking or banging sound on pipes after turning water off, and repeated water hammer can significantly damage pipes.
